Miami Marlins pitcher Sandy Alcantara has not really helped his team or his trade value with a poor start to the 2025 season, but that is not changing the Marlins’ strategy when it comes to a possible trade.

The Marlins are expected to field offers for Alcantara before the July 31 trade deadline despite his slow start to 2025. The team has no plans to sell low on the former Cy Young winner, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, and will be content to simply hold onto Alcantara if no team matches their asking price.

The Marlins have the luxury of being able to take things slowly with Alcantara, as he is under contract with the team through the 2027 season. He is still just 29, and the expectation is that he will only grow stronger as he continues to get back into a rhythm after Tommy John surgery cost him all of 2024.

Alcantara has long been viewed as the big prize on the trade market this season. However, momentum stalled when he posted an abysmal 8.47 ERA in his first 11 starts of the season.

The 2022 NL Cy Young winner has since shown signs of finding his form. In four starts since the beginning of June, he has posted a 2.74 ERA in 23 innings of work. As long as that continues, the Marlins will not have much difficulty finding widespread interest in him.

The Marlins entered play Thursday at 33-45 and are on their way to a likely losing season. They cannot afford to miss on an Alcantara trade, so they will be eager to see him re-establish as much value as possible.
