Max Muncy involved in the wildest coincidence

There are officially two players on Major League Baseball rosters with the name Max Muncy, and the parallels between them have only gotten more insane through the years.

The Muncy with whom most people are familiar has played third base for the Los Angeles Dodgers over the past eight seasons. He began his career with the Oakland Athletics, which is why it was so weird when the A’s drafted another player named Max Muncy — an infield prospect from Thousand Oaks, Calif. — in 2021.

Having two players named Max Muncy drafted by the same team, especially when they are not related, is bizarre enough. What seems almost impossible is that both were born on Aug. 25, though the Dodgers’ Muncy is 12 years older.

The younger Muncy made the MLB roster with the A’s for the first time this season. For a brief period over the weekend, both Muncys had the exact same batting average and OPS.

Don't want to alarm anybody, but right at this moment as I type this:

Max Muncy, A's: .180 average, .496 OPS
Max Muncy, Dodgers: .180 average, .496 OPS

(And they have the same birthday.)

At this point, you have to wonder if the younger Muncy is just a genetically modified version of the older one.

The 22-year-old Muncy has played in 15 games for Oakland this season. He is batting .180 with 1 home run and 4 RBI. The Muncy who went Stone Cold Steve Austin while celebrating another World Series title last season entered Monday batting .176 and is also off to a slow start.

If both Muncys finish the season with the same exact stats, that will be confirmation for many that we are living in a simulation.
