The Washington Nationals cannot get Max Scherzer healthy.
The ace right-hander, whose back tightened up in his first start after returning from the injured list, did not throw his bullpen session on Sunday as scheduled. According to Nationals manager Dave Martinez, he is “very doubtful” to make Tuesday’s scheduled start.

The Washington ace has started just one game since July 6. Back issues developed early in the month, and a minor issue blossomed into an IL trip after the All-Star break. After a five inning start in his July 25 return, his back once again caused him problems, and it’s now looking almost certain to cost him another start. The Nationals need him if they’re going to chase down a playoff spot, so the caution is warranted, but his inability to shake off the back problems is worrisome.
