Max Scherzer just can’t shake the back injury that has bothered him for the better part of the last month.
Scherzer woke up sore a day after making his first start in roughly three weeks, and an MRI revealed a mild strain of the rhomboid muscle. The Nationals ace believes he could make his next start, but it is not certain.
Scherzer said he woke up sore today, got MRI which showed “mild strain” of his rhomboid muscle. Got a stem cell shot, will take 2 days off from throwing, then try to go again. Believes he could still make next start vs Braves, but obviously that’s not a lock at this point.

Scherzer skipped the All-Star game with back tightness that seemed minor at the time, but he landed on the IL and missed nearly three weeks. He returned Thursday and threw five innings against Colorado, but he hasn’t come through it perfectly. With the Nationals trying to chase down the Atlanta Braves, they simply need a healthy Scherzer down the stretch, and this is a worrisome recurrence.
