Mets breakout pitcher suffers ugly non-contact injury vs. Braves

Griffin Canning on the ground in pain

New York Mets fans are holding their collective breath right now with breakout pitcher Griffin Canning.

The right-hander Canning had to exit Thursday’s start against the Atlanta Braves after suffering an ugly non-contact injury. Canning was pitching in the third inning at Citi Field in New York, N.Y. when Atlanta’s Nick Allen hit a groundball to the left side.

Canning pushed off on his left foot in reaction to the grounder and immediately came up hobbled. He went down to the infield grass and eventually walked gingerly off the field with the assistance of trainers. Here is the video.

Take a look at another angle of Canning’s injury.

#Mets starter Griffin Canning is DOWN, non-contact, and it does not look good. He's being helped off and cannot put weight on his left leg.

Best angle I could grab of it – his left leg plants and immediately gives. Maybe ankle or achilles? pic.twitter.com/29XoInzhSA

The Mets soon provided an update on Canning’s status but said only that he had suffered a “left ankle injury” and was set to undergo imaging.

Canning, who was acquired by the Mets via free agency in the offseason, has been a great story for them this year. He entered play on Thursday with a 7-3 record to go along with a 3.91 ERA and 67 strikeouts through 15 starts.

But the 47-34 Mets have already had more than their fair share of bad luck with pitching injuries this season. Tylor Megill, Kodai Senga, and Sean Manaea are among the Mets starters who are already on the injured list, and now it looks like Canning (who has really struggled with his health in the past) may unfortunately be next to join them.
