Matt Harvey’s career with the New York Mets is over, but the team is hoping to get something back for him.
The Mets are going to designate Harvey for assignment after he refused to go to the minors. That means the team has seven days to try and trade Harvey. If Harvey is not traded, he will go on waivers and become a free agent if he is not claimed.
According to Yahoo’s Jeff Passan, the Mets are telling teams that they are willing to eat a significant amount of the salary Harvey is owed this year.

Sources: Mets are telling teams they’re willing to eat a significant amount of the $4.5M owed Matt Harvey for a better return in a trade. Officials are dubious that the Mets can get much, if anything, and are willing to wait, hope he clears waivers and pursue him for the minimum.

Harvey’s salary for this season is $5.625 million, so he is only owed a prorated amount which is around $4.5 million.
As Passan says, teams are expecting Harvey to pass through waivers, which would allow teams to sign him for the major league minimum. That would also allow Harvey the opportunity to pick a team he feels would be a good match.
Mets manager Mickey Callaway has taken responsibility for what’s gone wrong, saying the team has failed Harvey.
