The season from hell continues for the New York Mets.
Mets star slugger Juan Soto had to exit Friday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers early. Soto was removed in the sixth inning at Citi Field in Queens, N.Y. due to what the team called “left calf soreness.”
On Saturday, the news quickly got worse. The Mets announced that Soto has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a “left calf strain.”
The five-time All-Star Soto, famously on a $765 million contract with the team, already missed time earlier this season due to a strain in his right calf. With Soto now dealing with a strain to his other calf as well, the concern for the Mets here is obviously significant.
Over 84 games so far this season, Soto was hitting .283 with 21 home runs and 52 RBIs. He also currently leads the NL in both OBP (.408) and OPS (.947).
As for the Mets, their season has been an absolute nightmare as they have the third-worst record in baseball at 43-61. With a second calf strain now likely to sideline Soto for a month or longer, New York could be in line for a big roster blow-up ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline.
