Mike Francesa tells Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen he’s ‘done a lousy job’

Mike Francesa

Mike Francesa very much has a tell-it-like-it-is style in his interviews, so it’s no surprise he did not hold back when talking with New York Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen on Friday.

Van Wagenen addressed the media to provide a “state of the Mets” type of speech prior to the start of the second half of the season. He later talked with Francesa on WFAN, and Francesa cut him off at one point to tell him the fans wouldn’t by his spiel because Van Wagenen has “done a lousy job so far.”

Van Wagenen’s Mets are now 40-51 after losing Friday to the Marlins. They have been a part of headlines over their seeming dysfunction, which included accusations of micromanaging.

Van Wagenen acknowledged that they have not been very good and said they are “disappointed.”

“We’re not very good and we’re disappointed with it and we are in the standings is not something we’re happy about,” Van Wagenen told Francesa. “We’re sorry to our fans that they haven’t been able to see us win more games. We know we want to do better. We got to figure out a way to do better. We had a pretty ambitious offseason. Not everything we did to address the bullpen or our run production or anything else for that matter has gone according to plan. We’re not going to quit. We got to be opportunistic and try and find ways to put us in a better position.”
