Notorious MLB umpire finally retiring

Joe West

The end of an umpiring era is upon us, as Joe West is officially calling it a career.

Major League Baseball announced in a press release on Friday that West has retired. The 69-year-old had worked 5,460 games, which is the most of any umpire in MLB history.

West, whose nicknames include “Cowboy Joe” and “Country Joe,” is a baseball legend — for better or worse. He was a respected veteran umpire but also known for his combative style. West clashed with players on numerous occasions due to both his strike zone and quick trigger when it came to ejections. There were also plenty of great moments with West during his 40-plus seasons on the diamond.

West seemed to become even more ornery in recent years, so many players and managers probably will not be sad to see him go. Still, he must have done plenty right to last 43 seasons and work six World Series.
