New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone probably wasn’t expecting to get bitten by a tweet that he sent over two years ago, but that’s exactly what happened this weekend.
Sunday night marked the series finale between the Yankees and the Boston Red Sox, and in the fifth inning, Sox star Mookie Betts clubbed a solo home run to break a scoreless tie. Some sleuths on Twitter then proceeded to dig up an old tweet that Boone had sent about Betts back in 2016.
Mookie!!!!!

The tweet quickly went viral as many users got a real chortle out of the irony.

For context, Boone was working as a commentator for ESPN at the time and posted the tweet in the midst of a two-homer game by Betts against Baltimore.
That doesn’t make the tweet any less hilarious though, especially since Betts has absolutely smoked the Yankees this season, entering play on Sunday batting .404 with a 1.163 OPS in 12 games against them.
Perhaps Boone should have taken the advice of this fellow MLBer and cleaned up his Twitter account when he became the manager of the Yankees.
