Padres reportedly in talks to acquire Marcus Stroman

Marcus Stroman

The San Diego Padres are reportedly in talks to acquire pitcher Marcus Stroman from the Toronto Blue Jays.

According to Jon Morosi of MLB.com, the Padres’ discussions with Toronto are serious, and Stroman is the target. San Diego has a deep pool of prospects to deal from, though the Blue Jays likely won’t nab any of the top names from the Padre system. He believes pitching prospects Michel Baez or Logan Allen could feature as part of the return, though it’s only speculation.

The Blue Jays would be dealing Stroman with his value at an all-time low. The 27-year-old was just 4-9 last season with a 5.54 ERA as he struggled with injuries. It was a far cry from 2017, where he threw over 200 innings with a 3.09 ERA, finishing in the top ten of AL Cy Young voting. That’s the pitcher the Padres would be hoping to get.

Earlier in the offseason, Toronto didn’t show much interest in dealing Stroman. Their thinking has apparently changed in the last month.
