The Boston Red Sox are open to trading Mookie Betts this offseason, and the San Diego Padres are among the teams to have shown interest in the former MVP.
The Athletic’s Dennis Lin reported on Thursday that San Diego has had trade talks with Boston about Betts. The Padres have been active in the trade market, acquiring Tommy Pham this offseason. They have also been in the conversation for Francisco Lindor, Mike Clevinger, Starling Marte, David Price and Whit Merrifield among others.
The Padres are constrained by their budget, but Lin says Betts is the type of player for whom they would be willing to go over.
In any trade for Betts, the Padres would want to unload Wil Myers and the $61 million he is owed over the next three seasons. They would also have to send along prospects, which is something Boston is seeking, particularly as they face potential punishment from MLB over sign stealing in 2018.
Boston appears likely to lose Betts, who is making $27 million in 2020 and set to become a free agent after that. The team could be looking to clear its books and reportedly may want to package David Price’s contract along with Betts in any deal.
Despite all the trade talks surrounding Betts, the MVP is still viewed as likely to open the season with the Red Sox, and a trade with the Padres is viewed as unlikely. Still, it’s good to keep in mind that San Diego is active and interested in improving, particularly when it comes to their right field spot.
