Phillies considering major shakeup in free agency?

The Philadelphia Phillies keep falling short in the playoffs, and a new report suggests that changes could be coming. That could even involve a big and unexpected splash in free agency.

The Phillies could pursue free agent third baseman Alex Bregman or shortstop Willy Adames to add another weapon to their lineup, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Either move would likely be contingent on whether they can move third baseman Alec Bohm in a trade.

One of the Phillies’ goals is to get a bit younger without sacrificing talent, and that would be one way of doing it. Adames is a year older than Bohm and Bregman is over two years older, but both profile as better players that could remain stars for years to come. Bohm, meanwhile, struggled in the second half of the season, and the Phillies perhaps have some doubts about him moving forward.

One thing that is clear is that the Phillies appear motivated to make some changes after their disappointing playoff exit at the hands of the New York Mets. That could involve some fairly well-known names leaving the team, both for underperformance and for financial reasons.

If the Phillies want Bregman, it is already clear they will face significant competition for his services. The same could be said of Adames as well.
