Phillies have interest in top free agent OF

Nick Castellanos smiles

The Philadelphia Phillies finished in second place in the NL East last year, and they’re hoping to do better this season. They may be trying to upgrade their roster in a big way too.

MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reported on Saturday that the Phillies are among the teams showing interest in free agent outfielder Nick Castellanos.

Morosi noted the connection between Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski and Castellanos. Dombrowski was the general manager of the Tigers when they drafted Castellanos.

Castellanos signed a 4-year, $64 million contract with the Reds prior to the 2020 season. But he played so well last year that he opted out of his contract so he could cash in on an even bigger deal.

The 30-year-old outfielder exploded with 38 doubles and 34 home runs last season. His .309 batting average, .576 slugging percentage and .939 OPS last year were all career-high marks. Castellanos is a career .278 hitter with a lifetime .814 OPS.
