Report: Rays want Jose Abreu ‘bad’

Sitting just half a game out of a Wild Card Spot, the Tampa Bay Rays appear to have a preferred trade target in mind as the Jul. 31 deadline nears.

Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports spoke with Joe Ostrowski of WSCR in Chicago on Monday and said that the Rays want Chicago White Sox slugger Jose Abreu “bad.” Nightengale noted that the team desperately needs a bat and added he thinks that they would part with a top-100 prospect for Abreu.

The three-time All-Star Abreu has 22 homers and 72 RBIs in 102 games for Chicago this year. He is already 32 though and will be a free agent in winter.

While the Rays are a stellar 60-48, they do lack some power, particularly of the right-handed variety. Abreu might not take too kindly to a trade however.
