The Boston Red Sox appear willing to roll the dice to help shore up a bullpen unit facing some uncertainty heading into 2017.
According to a report by Rob Bradford of WEEI on Monday, the Red Sox are “among the most aggressive suitors” for free agent reliever Greg Holland.
Holland, who turns 31 later this month, recorded 93 saves with a pristine 1.32 ERA for the Kansas City Royals from 2013 to 2014, earning All-Star nods in both seasons. But he regressed mightily in 2015 and underwent Tommy John surgery in October of that year to repair a UCL tear in his pitching elbow.
The Red Sox relief situation looks murky behind ninth-inning man Craig Kimbrel with Koji Uehara, Brad Ziegler, and Junichi Tazawa all free agents. Holland comes with significant risk considering that he still has yet to pitch since going under the knife, but Boston apparently sees enough reward in the do-it-all pitcher to potentially pull the trigger.
