At least one team is aiming very high ahead of the MLB trade deadline by trying to pry Elly De La Cruz away from the Cincinnati Reds.
The Boston Red Sox made an offer to the Reds for De La Cruz, according to Sean McAdam of MassLive. The offer was composed of minor league prospects, and the Reds rejected it.
The Reds are not completely opposed to trading De La Cruz. However, they would need a very good package of young major leaguers to pull the trigger, and the Red Sox were unwilling to subtract from their current roster to land De La Cruz.
De La Cruz, 24, is one of the game’s most dynamic young players. He is hitting .276 on the season with 18 home runs and 20 stolen bases. The Reds clearly see him as a part of their future, and he is under team control through 2029, so it would unquestionably take an enormous haul to get him.
The Red Sox are looking for an upgrade at shortstop with Trevor Story dealing with a long-term injury. If they are asking about De La Cruz, they are certainly willing to go big.
