Reds announcer makes awkward gaffe on his home run call

Cincinnati Reds announcer John Sadak seemingly got fooled by a home run ball during Sunday’s game between the Reds and San Diego Padres.

Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts hit a fly ball to left to open the fourth inning in the game at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, Oh. Surprisingly, the ball actually carried out, even though Bogaerts’ swing did not look particularly imposing.

Sadak got fooled, too. He initially described the hit as “looped to left,” as if it were a relatively routine fly ball, only to adjust as it carried the fence.

To be entirely fair to Sadak, one probably would not have expected this ball to go an estimated 389 feet based solely on Bogaerts’ swing. Even left fielder Gavin Lux seemed to think he was in range to make the catch before realizing he had no chance.

Ultimately, this is a pretty minor gaffe from Sadak. Previous Reds broadcasters have said far worse on the air.

The Reds went on to win Sunday’s game, 3-2.
