Ron Darling diagnosed with ‘treatable’ thyroid cancer

New York Mets

Former New York Mets pitcher and current commentator Ron Darling has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer, his family announced Monday.

In a statement posted on Twitter by Ron Darling Jr., Darling announced that he has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Doctors are optimistic that it is treatable, however, and he hopes to be back on the air within the next month or so.

Darling underwent surgery to remove a mass from his chest in April, which led to the cancer diagnosis.

The 58-year-old played in the Majors from 1983 through 1995, winning a World Series with the Mets in 1986. He has been a Mets analyst since 2006 and has also worked nationally for both TBS and MLB Network, primarily during the postseason.
