Royals give up an unreal Little League HR to Mets with 3 errors on 1 play

A New York Mets runner sliding into home plate

The Kansas City Royals somehow managed to out-Mets the New York Mets on Tuesday.

Kansas City and New York played Tuesday in the opener of a three-game set at Citi Field in Queens, N.Y. It did not take long for disaster to strike however as the Royals made a real mess of it from the very first inning.

Mets right fielder Carson Benge was up to bat with two runners on and two outs. On a 1-2 count, Benge slapped a weak comebacker towards the mound, but Royals pitcher Seth Lugo spiked the throw to first base, allowing the lead runner to score.

Royals first baseman Jac Caglianone then chased down the ball and attempted to hold the trailing runner at third base. Caglianone’s throw was horrific though and sailed somewhere in between third base and home plate, paving the way for another run to score.

Kansas City third baseman Nick Loftin then tracked down the (second) errant throw … and made it three with an errant throw of his own. Loftin fired wide of home plate, allowing Benge to come all the way around to score and capping off the Royals’ comedy of (literal) errors with a crescendo.

Here is the video of the absolutely absurd Little League home run.

The Royals were just one strike away from getting out of that inning unscathed. Instead though, a little 30-foot tapper by Benge ended up scoring three runs thanks to Kansas City’s sheer defensive inadequacy.

The 38-53 Mets have not exactly been a picture of competence themselves this season and have even given up some humiliating Little League home runs of their own. But during Tuesday’s game, they ended getting up outdone by the 37-54 Royals.
