Royals prioritizing Eric Hosmer over Mike Moustakas
The Royals have apparently made re-signing Eric Hosmer their priority over bringing back Mike Moustakas.
Heading into the offseason, the Royals had decisions to make on several pending free agents. Among them were Eric Hosmer, Alcides Escobar, Mike Moustakas, and Lorenzo Cain. Escobar signed a one-year deal to remain with Kansas City. Cain accepted a big contract from the Brewers. Between Hosmer and Moustakas, we now know whom the Royals are focusing on.
On Monday, Royals general manager Dayton Moore provided some insight on the Royals’ plans. He indicated Hosmer is the best fit for the future. Moore also said it was clear the Royals were not a priority for Moustakas.
DAYTON on MOUSTAKAS: “We felt that Hos is the priority. We have options at third. I wouldn’t say absolutely not. We want to make it clear that Hos is the player that fits us for the future. I want to get through the Hosmer negotiations before we work on Moustakas."

DAYTON on MOUSTAKAS: "Moustakas had some expectations that were a little different, places he wanted to play. It was clear from the beginning that we weren’t a high priority."

If they Royals are going to retain Hosmer, they will likely have to offer a lengthy contract. Hosmer reportedly has 7-year offers from both Kansas City and San Diego, but he hasn’t signed because he reportedly wants even more years. Hosmer has spent his entire major league career with the Royals and hit .318/.385/.498 with 25 home runs and 94 RBI last season.
Moustakas has also spent his big league career with Kansas City. He made his second All-Star team last year and hit .272/.314/.521 with 38 home runs and 85 RBI. Moustakas has reportedly expressed interest in joining the Angels. The Brewers have reportedly expressed interest in him.
