Steve Cohen issues apology to Mets fans

How bad was the ending to the New York Mets’ season? It was bad enough that owner Steve Cohen felt the need to offer fans a public apology for it.

Cohen took to X Monday morning to apologize to Mets fans for the team’s failure to even reach the playoffs despite high expectations and MLB’s second-highest payroll. He called the season “unacceptable,” and credited fans with showing up and supporting the team despite that lack of success.

“Mets fans everywhere. I owe you an apology,” Cohen wrote. “You did your part by showing up and supporting the team. We didn’t do our part.

“We will do a post-mortem and figure out the obvious and less obvious reasons why the team didn’t perform up to your and my expectations. … The result was unacceptable.”

Most owners would not go straight to the fans with a message like this, but Cohen does things his own way. Since buying the Mets in 2020, he has regularly communicated with fans on social media, perhaps a bit too openly at times.

Cohen’s disgust is understandable. After signing Juan Soto in the offseason, he set a target of up to four titles in the next decade. With ambitions like that, he would expect the team to make the playoffs every season.

The 2025 squad faltered down the stretch and lost out on the final NL Wild Card spot to the Cincinnati Reds despite being 45-24 at one point, making for an uncertain offseason. One of their star players is headed for free agency, so Cohen will have to decide if he is worth bringing back at the high price he will demand.

One thing Cohen will not be doing is changing managers, even though the team’s performance certainly could have justified a change.
