Trevor Bauer wanted to make his start in Game 3 of the ALCS so badly that he says he strongly considered cauterizing his wound with a soldering iron, and he regrets not doing so.
Bauer cut the pinkie finger on his throwing hand while repairing a drone on Friday morning, a day before his scheduled start in Game 2 of the ALCS. The cut required stitches and led the Indians to postpone his start until Game 3 on Monday.
When Bauer attempted to pitch in Game 3, he lasted just four batters as his finger was gushing blood, making it impossible for him to pitch. The ever-competitive Bauer was furious that he couldn’t make his start, and he said after the fact that he regretted not taking care of the wound himself.
“I even had a soldering iron in my hotel room,” Bauer said via Yahoo’s Jeff Passan. “Instead of going to the ER, I probably should’ve sealed it closed myself.”
Sealing his wound with a soldering iron could have exposed Bauer to much more, such as a burn and infection or other worse things. But just hearing Bauer say that shows you his competitive drive, which is something that was on display in Bauer’s celebration after the Indians’ victory.
