Unlikely MLB player has ultra-rare 4-homer game

One unlikely player suddenly became Barry Bonds on Saturday night.

Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Eugenio Suarez had the game of a lifetime against the Atlanta Braves at Chase Field in Phoenix, Ariz. on Saturday. Suarez homered not once … not twice … not even three times … but four times on the day.

Perhaps even more impressive was that his four homers came in his only four at-bats. Suarez saved his best for last too as his fourth dinger was a game-tying shot in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The 33-year-old Suarez became just the 19th player in MLB history to have a four-homer game and the first since JD Martinez in 2017. Four home runs in a single game is even rarer than a pitcher throwing a perfect game, which has been done 24 times in MLB history.

Suarez, an All-Star in 2018, has always had good power and already produced eight different seasons of 20 homers or more (peaking with 49 in the 2019 campaign). But his four-dinger explosion was very unexpected as Suarez was batting just .167 this season entering play on Saturday, is now a No. 6 hitter for the Diamondbacks, and is generally a lesser-known MLB player.

Unfortunately for Suarez though, he could only do so much as Arizona still went on to lose to Atlanta 8-7 in 10 innings after teammate Justin Martinez threw a wild pitch to bring home the go-ahead run. But the multi-talented right-handed hitter Suarez will just have to settle for a very nice boost to his hitting splits as well as a well-earned place in baseball’s all-time history book.
