A Pittsburgh Pirates fan falling from an outfield wall

A very frightening moment occurred during Wednesday’s game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs.

During the seventh inning of the contest at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pa., an unidenitified male fan fell from the Clemente Wall in right field. The fan tumbled over the wall, which is 21 feet high, and landed on the dirt warning track in the outfield.

The incident occurred right as Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen had just hit a two-run scoring double, causing the home crowd to cheer. A video showed the exact moment that the fan fell onto the field. He appeared to get up rapidly from his seat in the bleachers upon McCutchen’s hit and somersaulted over the guard railing to the field down below.

You can see the video at the link here (but beware that the content is graphic).

The game was delayed as the fan was tended to by members of the respective team training staffs as well as stadium personnel. He was eventually taken off the field on a cart (with photos online circulating of the fan laying on the cart with visible blood on his face).

After the game, which the Pirates won 4-3, the team released a statement on the incident. They said that the fan had been transported to Allegheny General Hospital. The Pirates noted that “no further information is available at this time” and added that “our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.”

Pittsburgh Public Safety later released their own statement about the incident, revealing that the fan was in “critical condition.”

Wednesday was a scary night in the baseball world as a Washington Nationals staff member also collapsed during batting practice before a game against the Phillies in nearby Philadelphia.
