Shohei Ohtani has apparently learned a thing or two about the English language.
Video went viral from a game earlier this week between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Toronto Blue Jays of Ohtani dropping a loud expletive in English. On Tuesday at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ont., Ohtani was at the plate when he was inadvertently struck by Toronto catcher Brandon Valenzuela on a pickoff throw behind the runner at first base.
Valenzuela appeared to make accidental contact with Ohtani’s funny bone. That resulted in a very pained reaction from Ohtani as he went up the first-base line to try to walk it off.
About ten seconds after being struck, Ohtani let loose an incredibly loud “F–K!!!” A fan-shot video from the stands showed the unexpected moment in its entirety (take a look at the link here).
The 31-year-old Ohtani is a native of Japan but has played in Major League Baseball since 2018. He still uses a translator though and currently employs Will Ireton, who took over back in 2024 for Ohtani’s disgraced former interpreter Ippei Mizuhara.
But Ohtani has notably given (small) public speeches in English after each of the Dodgers’ World Series victories in the last two years. Now it is clear that Ohtani knows his way around the curse words in English as well.
