White Sox lose game because of hamstring injury

Mike Tauchman stands up after an injury

The Chicago White Sox are more familiar with losing than any other team in baseball, but the way they were defeated on Wednesday night was new even for them.

The White Sox were trailing 3-1 and had the bases loaded in the top of the ninth inning of their game against the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio. Third baseman Miguel Vargas singled to left field, which brought Jacob Amaya around to score. Mike Tauchman was also waved around for what would have been the game-tying run, but he was thrown out by a wide margin at home plate.

Tauchman stood no chance of scoring because he injured his hamstring while running the bases. He came up lame as soon as he rounded third base.

You can see another angle that shows the moment Tauchman felt something grab in his hamstring:

There is no way to know for certain if Tauchman would have scored had he been running at full speed, but the injury turned into an automatic out for Cleveland. It was also the final out of the game.

Tauchman had just returned after he landed on the 10-day injured list due to a right hamstring strain. The White Sox announced on Wednesday night that he experienced tightness in the same hamstring and would be evaluated further.

The White Sox, who won just 41 games last season, fell to 2-9 with the latest loss. Fans have learned to not be surprised with any of the team’s losses, but the latest was particularly painful — in more ways than one.
