An injury to Wilson Ramos led to a historic All-Star selection for Yan Gomes.
Gomes was announced on Saturday evening as the replacement for Ramos on the AL All-Star team. Gomes, who was the first Brazilian-born player in the majors, is now the first ever Brazilian-born player to make the All-Star Game.

News of Gomes’ addition to the All-Star team was announced during the Cleveland Indians’ game against the New York Yankees. His addition to the team also shows just how slim the pickings are at catcher in the AL.
Tampa Bay’s Ramos has been the best everyday catcher in the AL. After that, Gomes has arguably been the next best. He’s only batting .247 with a .756 OPS, but that’s better than what most of his competition is doing. Now in his seventh season, you won’t find Gomes complaining about his selection.
