Anthony Davis apparently will not be getting his (extremely lofty) wish.
The Washington Wizards would like to agree to a new long-term deal with their star big man Davis, Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints reported on Thursday. Siegel adds though that the Wizards are refusing to give Davis a max contract extension.
Davis, who was traded to the Wizards last February, has reportedly been asking for the max in negotiations with the team this summer. In Davis’ case, that would look like a four-year, $275 million extension with Washington.
But there are a million and one reasons why Davis does not deserve that figure at this point in his career. Of course, Davis is extremely prone to injuries (both big and small), and he will turn 34 years old in the middle of next season (already marking Davis’ 15th in the NBA).
Additionally, the Wizards just extended soon-to-be 28-year-old Trae Young on a sizable new contract last month. To max out a second older star would essentially be team-building suicide for a younger rebuilding franchise.
It remains to be seen if Davis would be willing to settle for a more modest extension in order to stay with a non-contender in the Wizards. But we do know that Davis has already set some borderline-absurd goals for both himself and the Wizards next season.
