The New York Yankees are scouting the Los Angeles Angels for potential trades, according to a report.
MLB.com’s Jon Morosi reported on Saturday that the Yankees have kept a recent eye on the Angels in the case that the Anaheim club decides to become sellers at the deadline. The Angels entered Saturday 48-47 and are 10 games behind the Seattle Mariners for the second wild-card spot. Combining the amount of games behind the Angels are with their injuries to Shohei Ohtani and Garrett Richards among others could be enough to persuade the Angels to be sellers.
Pitchers Tyler Skaggs and Andrew Heaney are among the names the Yankees could look to for starting pitching help.
Skaggs, 27, is 7-5 with a 2.57 ERA this season with 105 strikeouts. He is under team control through 2020, which should make him even more attractive as a deadline piece.
Heaney is also 27. He is 5-6 with a 3.84 ERA this season and has 96 strikeouts in 96 innings. He is under team control through 2021.
What also could increase the likelihood of a trade between the teams is that Angels GM Billy Eppler used to be an assistant for Yankees GM Brian Cashman.
The Yankees, who have the third-best record in MLB, have also been in contact with an interesting NL club about their pitchers too.
