One name has been tied to the New York Yankees as the team searches for its next second baseman.
The Yankees have moved on from longtime second baseman Gleyber Torres. The former Yankees All-Star signed with a different AL team in free agency.
With the Bronx Bombers looking for Torres’ potential replacement, the team has reportedly “checked in on” infielder Jorge Polanco, according to the New York Post’s Mark W. Sanchez.
Polanco was troubled by a lingering knee injury during his disappointing 2024 campaign with the Seattle Mariners. The 31-year-old had surgery in October to repair his left knee but is expected to be healthy in time for the start of next season. Polanco is already back to fielding ground balls, per the report.
In his lone season with the Mariners, Polanco had career lows in batting average (.213) and OPS (.651) across 118 games. The Mariners declined the $12 million option to keep Polanco for the 2025 season.
Polanco earned an All-Star nod in 2019 as a member of the Minnesota Twins. The Dominican hit .295 with 22 home runs and 79 RBIs in 153 games that year. But his most productive season came two years later when Polanco hit .269 with 33 home runs and 98 RBIs across 152 contests.
The Yankees are not the only AL contender eyeing Polanco to replace a departing All-Star. But Polanco as far from the only infielder the Yankees are looking into as well.
