Former Cy Young finalist could be available for trade

A former National League Cy Young finalist could be on the move in the next two weeks.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are viewed around the league as likely sellers, and that could include pitcher Zac Gallen, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Gallen is slated to become a free agent after the season, which has Arizona motivated to move him.

For the last several years, Gallen has been one of the most reliable pitchers in the league. In 2023, he finished third in NL Cy Young voting, and has a lifetime 3.55 ERA. He was the ace of a staff that pushed Arizona to the World Series that year, and he put together a memorable effort in that series despite ultimately losing in five games. He also remains relatively young, as he turns 30 in August.

Gallen has not been as good this season. His 5.40 ERA would be the highest of his career, due in part to 21 home runs allowed in 20 starts. That is a lot for a pitcher who has never given up more than 22 homers in a single season.

The Diamondbacks enter play Sunday at 46-50. That leaves them 6.5 games back of the final NL Wild Card spot, and they have to contend with a loaded NL West as well. With ace pitcher Corbin Burnes also out for the season, they probably do not have a route to contention in 2025.
