Brian Windhorst says Giannis Antetokounmpo is in play for surprise West team

Giannis Antetokounmpo is facing an uncertain future with the Milwaukee Bucks, and several teams will likely inquire about the availability of the two-time NBA MVP this summer. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst says one surprising Western Conference contender might have the means to put together a package.

During Friday morning’s edition of “Get Up,” analyst Jay Williams floated the idea of Antetokounmpo potentially wanting to play alongside Stephen Curry with the Golden State Warriors. Windhorst said the idea is not all that farfetched.

“Yes, there is a package that the Warriors could use. They have some future draft picks. They have interesting young players,” Windhorst said, via Ali Thanawalla of NBC Sports Bay Area. “Like last year, Brandon Podziemski was off limits. Who knows if that’s going to be the case this year? But they can’t win a bidding war.”

Windhorst believes the Warriors would potentially be able to trade for Giannis if the nine-time All-Star insisted on going to Golden State. If the Bucks were only willing to accept the best offer, that offer probably would not be from the Warriors. The same would be true for other teams.

“First off, I just want to say Giannis has not let it be known he certainly wants out of Milwaukee, so I do not think we should assume that. If we do reach that point where Giannis was going to look around, he will have agency in this,” Windhorst added. “He has two years left on his contract. The Bucks don’t have to listen to him. But if he were to come to Milwaukee and say, I want to play with Steph, there could be a deal worked out. The same would apply, in my view, to the Knicks or Lakers, if he says, ‘I want to be a Knick, send me to New York,’ or, ‘I want to be a Laker.'”

The rumors linking Antetokounmpo to the Warriors already seem to be taking on a life of their own.

Giannis, who is 30, had another outstanding season this year with 30.4 points and 11.9 rebounds per game. He was even better in the playoffs with 33.0 points and 15.4 rebounds per game, but it was not enough for Milwaukee to win a series. The Bucks lost to the Indiana Pacers in five games in the opening round.

Though he has already been linked to multiple teams, Giannis is highly unlikely to be moved. He has two years remaining on his contract, and he has not given any indication that he will demand a trade. In the absence of that, the Bucks would almost certainly prefer to hold onto their franchise cornerstone.
