Charles Barkley has never been shy about his critiques of LeBron James, and the NBA legend’s latest free-agency decision drew another pointed response.
Speaking on The Stephen A. Smith Show shortly after James announced his two-year, $8 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, Barkley revived a long-standing criticism.
“The number one knock on LeBron for older guys like myself has always been, ‘Yo, man, you always stacking your team,’” Barkley said. “He stacked in Miami. He stacked in Cleveland. He stacked in LA. Now he’s stacking it in Philly. So that to me, I’m going to still have the same criticism I’ve always had.”
James, who is leaving the Los Angeles Lakers and entering his 24th NBA season, joins a 76ers roster already featuring Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and recent acquisition Jaylen Brown. The four-time champion framed the move as one final championship pursuit.
Barkley left room for a dramatic shift in his evaluation. If James delivers back-to-back titles in Philadelphia and walks away at age 44 or 45, the Hall of Famer said he would declare James the greatest player he has ever seen—an admission Barkley has never made before.
The comments underscore the enduring debate over how James has constructed contending teams throughout his career.
