Clippers reportedly planning to introduce team mascot, Twitter reacts

As if the publicly-lambasted new jerseys hadn’t given us enough of an eyeful from the Clippers’ branding campaign this offseason already. Apparently Lob City is now planning to introduce a new team mascot, which could be unveiled to the public as early as midseason.

According to a report by Brad Turner of the LA Times on Wednesday, the Clippers are in the planning stages of developing the mascot. While it won’t be done by Opening Night, the team could have it ready by the All-Star Break. The plan is for the mascot to represent the team in community events.

The Clippers are one of only a select few remaining teams in the Association currently devoid of a mascot presence.

The logistics of what the mascot will look like and be named are still being discussed, but the team has already had some interesting brainstorming sessions, it looks like.

Oh boy.

At this point, maybe they should just follow the combination of Chris Paul and their nautical roots to its logical mascot conclusion: the banana boat.

Of course, the good folks at Twitter had fun with the news.

There were those who appealed to the Microsoft origins of owner Steve Ballmer.

Others were beguiled by mascot nostalgia of yesterday.

There were the quirky suggestions…

…the “too soon” brass…

…and other local mascots engaging in territoriality.

I guess this means that the reign of Clipper Darrell as the team’s unofficial mascot is going to be coming to an end soon. For shame.
