Could Darius Garland force trade away from Cavaliers?

Massive changes appear to be on the horizon for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Cleveland on Wednesday was eliminated from the playoffs following their Game 5 loss in the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Boston Celtics. The Cavaliers, playing without Donovan Mitchell for the second straight game, fell 113-98 at TD Garden in Boston, Mass.

Mitchell’s future with the team was already uncertain before the postseason even began. There have been rumblings that Mitchell would ask for a trade with one year remaining on his deal.

Mitchell’s backcourt partner Darius Garland may also have doubts about his future with the team, according to a report published Wednesday by The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Joe Vardon, and Jason Lloyd.

If Mitchell signs an extension with the Cavaliers, Garland’s representation would reportedly “have a conversation” with the Cavs’ front office about potentially trading Garland to a team with a better backcourt fit. Garland is represented by Klutch Sports agent Rich Paul.

Garland’s fit with Mitchell has been questionable ever since the team traded for the former Utah Jazz star two seasons ago. Garland’s usage rate and production have both declined since he made his first All-Star team in 2022 before Mitchell’s arrival.

During his lone All-Star campaign, Garland averaged 21.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 8.6 assists on 46.2% shooting and 38.3% from three. His numbers have dipped in each category this season.

The Cavaliers may also be considering a coaching shakeup following another early postseason exit.
