Draymond Green was so desperate to get Kevin Durant to sign with the Golden State Warriors earlier this summer that he wonders if his constant recruiting led to Durant losing respect for him.
During an appearance on “Conan” that aired Wednesday night, Green joked about how stalker-ish he must have sounded in trying to convince Durant to be his teammate.
“I recruited KD really really hard,” Green said, as transcribed by Dan Feldman of Pro Basketball Talk. “And it was like the equivalent of a college coach trying to get a top-five recruit – although I would’ve broke every NCAA rule there was, because I called him a million times. I texted him a-million-and-one times. And I tried to show up wherever he was every chance I got.
“When I found out he was coming, I came back to my senses, and I said, ‘I wonder if he respects me as a man now, the way I just blew his phone up.’ He had to have a girlfriend who got on his nerves worse than that before. So, I questioned myself.”
How much contact did Green and his teammates have with Durant. The report about how some of Durant’s former teammates felt about it should give you a pretty good idea.
Whatever Green did, it obviously didn’t hurt. As they say, all is well that ends well.
