$665,000 would mean a lifetime to a lot of people. It’s not enough to satisfy Indiana Fever Sophie Cunningham, however.
Cunningham went viral after admitting that she was frustrated by her new 1-year, $665,000 contract with the Indian Fever.
“I’m not even gonna lie to you, though, it’s a little, kind of, frustrating,” Cunningham said about her contract during a recent episode of her Show Me Something podcast.
With money flying around in the WNBA following the WNBA’s new collective bargaining agreement, Cunningham probably felt that she deserved more than what she signed up with Indiana.
On Monday, Cunningham set the record straight about her viral comment, saying she was more disappointed with the length of her contract than the money itself, while reiterating her love for Indiana
“I’m gonna shut this down right now. I’m not mad about the money, Cunningham wrote on X.
“I just wanted more years because I love it here. I wanted to get a house so I could bring my dog and donkey to Indy with me. That’s it. That’s the truth. I think we have something very special here in Indiana!!”
Then, on Tuesday, Cunningham doubled down on her point, saying she had multi-year offers from other teams but loved Indiana so much that she opted to stay, via Chloe Peterson of The Indianapolis Star.
Although she didn’t secure a multi-year deal with the Fever, she is set to earn significantly more than she did in 2025. That season, she played on a 1-year, $100,000 contract with Indiana, which was not even a sixth of what she is about to make in 2026.
