Report: Warriors would likely draft Anthony Edwards with No. 1 overall pick

The Golden State Warriors finished with the worst record in the NBA this season, and now there is an indication of which way they may be leaning if they land the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.

Connor Letorneau of the San Francisco Chronicle reported on Saturday that, if the Warriors land the No. 1 choice and decide not to trade it, they will likely take Georgia guard Anthony Edwards. Should the pick fall in the range of No. 2 to No. 5 instead though, the team will strongly consider Auburn forward Isaac Okoro, Iowa State guard Tyrese Haliburton, and Israeli forward Deni Avdija, among other prospects.

Edwards, 18, is a 6-foot-5 shooting guard who was named SEC Freshman of the Year this past season. He averaged 19.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game for Tom Crean’s Bulldogs, who posted a 16-16 record.

We heard that the Warriors were leaning against taking a true seven-footer, so this report is consistent with previous ones about their presumptive approach to the draft. It would be interesting though to see how a player like Edwards would fit in on the Warriors with Andrew Wiggins and a healthy Klay Thompson already on the wings.
