Jamal Crawford still uses a Blackberry

Jamal Crawford

Ex-Sixth Man of the Year Jamal Crawford is showing his age in the year 2019.

In a story this week by Alex Kennedy of HoopsHype on the growing popularity of team group chats in the NBA, former Phoenix Suns assistant Cody Toppert spoke on various chat platforms and made a funny revelation about Crawford.

“There are many messaging options. It all comes down to preference,” he said. “GroupMe is used by a lot of teams, and I like it because you can see who has or hasn’t read your message. Some teams use WhatsApp [especially overseas teams]. There’s also Teamworks, which is a team-focused messaging app.

“Last year, when I was with the Suns, we tried several of the apps, but our players were having trouble getting our messages for whatever reason, so we went old-school and would just send group texts over iMessage,” Toppert went on. “That ended up being the most successful group-chat option for us. Jamal Crawford still has a BlackBerry, so we couldn’t include him on the group texts and had to send everything to him in a separate text, which I thought was hilarious.”

Crawford, who averaged 7.9 points per game for Phoenix in 2018-19 but remains unsigned for the coming season, is 39 years old and was already getting buckets in the NBA when the Blackberry was at peak popularity.

In light of that, perhaps Crawford’s choice of smartphone isn’t particularly surprising. After all, he is far from the only star athlete who still uses one.
