LeBron Watch: Stephen A. Smith Makes a Prediction, Jay-Z Says Very Little

June 28, 2010 by Steve DelVecchio • Comments

If nothing else, Jay-Z has made it tough to get a read on what his approach will be in trying to land LeBron James.  Publicly, he’s come out and stated that he would not try to convince LeBron to sign with the Nets, although we all know that’s completely false.  With July 1 only days away, the LeBron James free agency rumors are in full swing.  It’s already been said that Chris Bosh and LeBron to the Chicago Bulls is a done deal.  Stephen A. Smith disagrees with that prediction and has made it clear that he believes LeBron and Bosh are both headed to Miami to team with Dwyane Wade.  If that’s true you can go ahead and cancel the season, but we’ll get into that after.  First, have a look at the video of Jay-Z talking about LeBron James with David Letterman, courtesy of Waiting For Next Year via Sports by Brooks Live:

There are some rumblings about Jay-Z deserving a tampering fine from David Stern because of this.  While I agree that he’s let Jay-Z skate too often in the past and get away with saying things that he wouldn’t let someone like Mark Cuban get away with, I actually think Jay-Z did a pretty decent job of not saying too much about the free agent.  It’s tougher than it looks to give an interview on a show and be expected to entertain people while still adhering to the extremely strict rules the NBA has in place for discussing free agents before July 1.

On to the fantastic Stephen A. Smith.  You already know how I feel about the way he overreacts and craves attention, so I’m skeptical about believing anything he seems positive about.  That being said, Stephen A. said on his radio show that LeBron James and Chris Bosh are going to sign with the Miami Heat and play alongside Dwyane Wade under Pat Riley.  Here’s what the cocky and outspoken Smith had to say in more detail:

It comes down to LeBron picking between the Miami Heat and Cleveland. I’ve spoken to my sources in Cleveland and New York and I’ve known one guy for 15 years that has never given me false information. You’re only as good as your sources. LeBron James is going to play with Dwyane Wade in South Beach. Chris Bosh and LeBron James are going to Miami Heat. It’s not official, but I’m telling you LeBron is going to the Miami Heat.

I suppose it’s not impossible, but if you choose to subscribe to this theory do yourself a favor and don’t do so because Stephen A. Smith’s source says so.  He’s the type of guy that would say anything to create a buzz and not care if it’s true or not.  Why would he?  He somehow scored his own radio show, didn’t he?
