Joel Embiid aiming to return next week

Joel Embiid

Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid is targeting a return next week after over two weeks on the sidelines due to a hand injury.

Embiid practiced Friday for the first time since his finger surgery, and made it clear that he wants to play next week.

“Just trying to get back into it and make the progress that’s necessary,” Embiid said Friday, via Tim Bontemps of ESPN. “But I feel good. … I think my finger feels good.

“Right now we are sixth in the East. Next week, I’m hoping to play.”

We’re right around the time Embiid would be reevaluated after his surgery. Given that he was able to practice, it certainly seems he’s making good progress, but we probably won’t know just how realistic the chances of him playing next week are until the Sixers medical staff weighs in.

Embiid is averaging 23.4 points and 12.3 rebounds per game this season. The Sixers have been mostly steady without him, going 5-3 in the eight games he’s missed.
