Karl-Anthony Towns and Mitchell Robinson have gone from teammates to rivals over the offseason.
While the friendship remains between the two, it’s going to be a different atmosphere when they next share the court, beginning in the 2026-27 NBA season after Mitchell decided to sign with the Knicks’ Atlantic Division rivals, Boston Celtics.
After spending his first eight NBA seasons with the Knicks, Robinson signed a 3-year, $47.4 million deal with the Celtics earlier this month, a move that prompted a candid reaction from Towns.
“I don’t even know if I could look at Mitch with a Celtics jersey on after everything, so I’ll just have to start laughing at Mitch when we see each other,” Towns told The New York Times in a recent episode of The Interview. He owes me a pickup truck.”
Robinson served as Towns’ chief backup during their time together with the Knicks. While Towns is an elite scorer, especially for a big man, Robinson mainly provided defense for New York, which welcomed him to the league as a second-round pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.
While Robinson has left, the Knicks got a replacement for him to serve as the top insurance behind Towns after they signed veteran big man Andre Drummond to a 1-year, $3.9 million contract in the summer.
