Kevin Durant: Stephen A. Smith is ‘lying’ with Lakers talk
Kevin Durant may be interested in joining the Los Angeles Lakers when he becomes a free agent next summer, but the Oklahoma City Thunder star insists Stephen A. Smith would have no way of knowing about his plans.
Earlier this week, Smith cited sources who claim Durant has made joining the Lakers his “primary objective” if he ends up leaving the Thunder. On Friday, Durant told reporters Smith has no idea what he’s talking about.
“I don’t talk to Stephen A Smith at all,” he said, per Anthony Slater of The Oklahoman. “Nobody in my family, my friends, they don’t talk to Stephen A Smith. So he’s lying.”
Durant was then asked about how he plans to approach free agency rumors from now until the end of the season.
“If you ask me a question, I’ll talk about them,” he said. “But like I said before, I have people who I talk to about everything and I know for a fact they didn’t talk to him, so he’s making up stories.”
If you want to read really deep into it, Durant wasn’t saying he has no interest in signing with the Lakers. It seemed more like he was insisting Stephen A. doesn’t have any sources who would be informed about Durant’s future plans.
Like any other free agent, Durant would be wise to keep all of his options open. The common belief is that he will stay in Oklahoma City, but one superstar already said he intends to recruit K.D. to play for his team. The Lakers have as good a chance as anyone at the moment, especially if Kobe Bryant ends up retiring.
