Kings reportedly add Joe Dumars as special advisor to GM

The Sacramento Kings are boosting their front office by adding a Hall of Famer who once constructed an NBA champion.

According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, the Kings are expected to announce Friday that they have named former Detroit Pistons president Joe Dumars as a special advisor to general manager Vlade Divac. Dumars will report directly to Divac and brings nearly a decade and a half of front office experience to the table.

Dumars ran the Pistons from 2000 through 2014. While there, he built one of the most successful teams of the 2000s, reaching six straight Eastern Conference finals and winning an NBA title in 2004. Once the core he built aged and went their separate ways, he was unable to rebuild them into a contender again.

Dumars had been linked to the New Orleans Pelicans job, but it ultimately went to David Griffin. Instead, he’ll likely be a key cog in the front office to an up-and-coming squad.
