Report: Lakers to consider Lionel Hollins, Frank Vogel and Mike Woodson

Lionel Hollins

The Los Angeles Lakers have gone through the candidates on their A-list for their next head coach and have moved on to their B-list.

The Lakers are going to add former NBA head coaches Lionel Hollins, Frank Vogel and Mike Woodson to their head coaching search, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

The Lakers originally were down to two finalists for the job: Monty Williams and Ty Lue. Williams took the Phoenix Suns job before the Lakers had made their decision, while Lue backed out after the team reportedly failed to meet his contract desires.

Hollins, 65, served as the Memphis Grizzlies’ head coach from 2008-2013. The team made the playoffs in his final three seasons, reaching the second round once and the conference finals in his final season. After a year off, he took the Brooklyn Nets job but was fired during his second season on the job.

Vogel, 45, coached the Indiana Pacers from 2010-2016 and led them to the conference finals twice before they lost to LeBron’s Miami Heat. He coached the Orlando Magic for two seasons but was fired after going 54-110.

Woodson, 61, coached the Hawks and Knicks. He most recently worked as an assistant coach for the Clippers from 2014-2018.

Fans probably will not be too thrilled about all the retread coaches they’re considering.

The LA Times’ Tania Ganguli says they are also considering Juwan Howard and Jason Kidd.

The Lakers felt strongly enough about Kidd that they reportedly wanted to have him on Lue’s prospective staff.
