The Los Angeles Lakers are happy with JJ Redick as their head coach and have made a commitment to him to match that sentiment.

The Lakers held a preseason media session at their training facility on Thursday. During that session, Lakers GM Rob Pelinka announced that the team had signed Redick to a contract extension. This comes a year after he signed a 4-year, $32 million deal when he took over as head coach.

Redick is entering his second season as the Lakers’ head coach. The team went 50-32 in his first season and lost in the first round of the playoffs, but the Lakers are apparently happy with him.

“We think he’s a special coach with a special voice that’s really helping us to continue to define the culture of Lakers excellence,” Pelinka said of Redick. “We just wanted to make a clear statement that this is what we believe in, what we’re going to lean into, and what our players are going to mold into as we continue to develop the identity. I think having long-term planning is helpful as we build this team going forward.”

Redick spoke with the media as well and expressed a focus on building a championship team.

“We’re going to ask guys to be in championship shape, have championship communication, and championship habits… it’s a daily commitment,” Redick said.

The Lakers are beginning a transition away from LeBron James as a focal point of the team to Luka Doncic. Doncic has turned some heads by getting into better physical shape this offseason.
