LeBron James got the internet buzzing on Monday with a brief video teasing what he called “The Second Decision.” There is some evidence, however, that the topic of that decision will not have anything to do with basketball.
James’ video teases “the decision of all decisions,” and will be released on Oct. 7. Several people were quick to note that Amazon, one of James’ major sponsors, is holding its seasonal Amazon Day sales event on Oct. 7 and 8.
In other words, James’ cryptic video might just be an ad to promote Amazon’s sale.

It was also pointed out that James featured prominently in Amazon’s last Prime Day campaign in July. That ad leaned into retirement speculation as well.

James turns 41 in December, and any season could be his last. Thus, any tease like this is bound to start retirement rumors. Both James and Amazon know this, and will take advantage of that speculation to grab the public’s attention.
In this instance, it has certainly worked. It even succeeded in inflating Los Angeles Lakers ticket prices. James may well announce at some point that this upcoming season will be his last, but that has not happened yet, and many are rightly skeptical that it won’t come like this, either.
