Did Marc Gasol take shot at Grizzlies with comments about Spanish National Team?

Marc Gasol

The evidence is mounting that All-Star big man Marc Gasol is growing frustrated with his Memphis Grizzlies.

In an interview with Manu Carreño of Spanish radio network Cadena SER that ran Friday, Gasol spoke glowingly of competing for the Spanish National Team once again at EuroBasket this summer. He also appeared to take a shot at the Grizzlies in the process.

“We’re a family, it’s a reality,” he said. “We overcome bad moments, we have mentors and leaders, such as Pau [Gasol] and [Juan Carlos] Navarro who are also there to give pause and tranquility. The atmosphere is very different from Memphis. I hope we can win a ring, we gotta be very consistent and disciplined.”

It’s hard to say whether saying the atmosphere being different from Memphis qualifies as a compliment for the Spanish team, a shot a Memphis, or both, but the comment does raise eyebrows.

Gasol, 32, has played with Memphis for his entire nine-year NBA career, but his time there has been characterized by a relative lack of playoff success. He hinted last month that he may be open to leaving the team, and though Gasol is under contract for two more years, one has to start wondering about the possibility of a trade request, especially as he begins to decline with age.
