Report: Mavericks, Heat unlikely to rekindle Goran Dragic trade

The Miami Heat thought they had the trade they needed to make to allow them to sign Jimmy Butler, but the situation is now very much in limbo.

The Miami Heat appeared to believe Sunday night that they were sending guard Goran Dragic to the Dallas Mavericks to clear the necessary cap space to add Butler in a sign-and-trade with the Philadelphia 76ers. However, confusion over the players involved in the deal led to its collapse. According to Brad Townsend of the Dallas Morning News, it appears unlikely to be revived.

As of last night a source close to Dragic said it was doubtful Dragic-to-Mavs can be rekindled. We’ll see. Miami is stuck. Dallas needs to do something reasonably big, sooner-than-later, to rescue its FA period efforts.

The Heat are placed in the difficult position of knowing that few teams have the cap space needed to absorb players, and they absolutely have to do something to finish the Butler deal. It no longer sounds like the Mavericks will be the solution to their issues.
